The Shipbuilding Association of Canada, in conjunction with Vanguard Magazine will be hosting a Shipbuilding Technology Forum in Ottawa’s Fairmont Chateau Laurier Hotel.
This one-day forum is intended to raise awareness about current and emerging technologies that have the potential to significantly impact how ships are built and outfitted.
Some of the topics of interest include liquid natural gas (LNG) propulsion, new building strategies, design, cost reduction, improving production, ship classification and green passports, just to name a few.
The timing of this event is perfect, as the National Shipbuilding Procurement Strategy (NSPS) is spearheading unprecedented changes in shipbuilding and marine technology in Canada. NSPS directly affects two major Canadian shipyards and many technology suppliers, but it is not a panacea for them. Our forum will benefit all shipyards and suppliers, but it will be particularly helpful to those that are still primarily focused on the commercial marketplace.
The Canadian government recently signed a free trade agreement with the European Union that will require us to achieve higher manufacturing productivity to remain competitive in the global market.
If projections are correct, we can expect limitless markets to be available to Canadians in the arctic and the offshore oil and gas sectors. Additionally, countries with no prior interest in the arctic are preparing to take advantage of the opportunities in the arctic.
