The big picture: HMCS Ville de Québec left Halifax today to join Standing NATO Maritime Group One (SNMG1), the latest chapter in Canada’s ongoing contribution to NATO collective defence.

Driving the news: The frigate will operate with Allied naval forces in the North Atlantic, North Sea and Baltic Sea until December 2026, supporting freedom of navigation, protecting maritime routes and reinforcing NATO’s deterrence posture. As part of SNMG1, it will also back the maritime component of the NATO Allied Reaction Force, ready to respond to emerging security threats.

By the numbers:

  • 12 — Halifax-class frigates in the RCN fleet
  • ~240 — crew aboard each frigate, drawn from the RCN, RCAF and Canadian Army
  • 1 — CH-148 Cyclone maritime helicopter embarked, with its own Helicopter Air Detachment
  • 10+ years — Canada has rotated ships through NATO’s Standing Naval Forces

Also deployed: HMCS Moncton and HMCS Edmonton left port July 6 to support Standing NATO Mine Countermeasures Group One, operating in European waters through October 2026 on mine countermeasure operations.
