Canada’s aerospace test and evaluation community is gaining additional operational support as Voyageur Aviation Corp. secures a new contract with Canada’s defence department to assist one of the country’s most specialized aviation units.
The company announced it has been awarded a contract by the Department of National Defence (DND) to provide aviation support services to the Aerospace Engineering Test Establishment (AETE), the Canadian Armed Forces’ centre for aircraft flight testing and evaluation. Operating out of Ottawa, the unit plays a central role in ensuring the performance, safety, and operational readiness of aircraft used by the Royal Canadian Air Force.
The contract represents a significant step in Voyageur’s ongoing collaboration with Canada’s defence community and further expands the company’s work in providing aircraft maintenance, management, and specialized aviation capabilities to support complex missions.
Supporting Canada’s Flight-Test Experts
AETE occupies a unique place within Canada’s military aviation ecosystem. The establishment conducts flight testing across a wide spectrum of aircraft platforms and associated systems, ranging from fighter jets and multi-engine aircraft to rotary-wing platforms and uncrewed aerial systems.
Its teams—comprised of test pilots, flight test engineers, and Qualified Test Air Combat System Officers—are responsible for validating aircraft modifications and ensuring that new capabilities integrate effectively with the RCAF’s operational fleet.
In essence, the organization functions as the proving ground for the technologies and upgrades that shape the future of Canada’s air power.
The unit recently relocated to a newly refurbished hangar facility at the Ottawa International Airport, positioning its operations within a modernized environment designed to support the increasingly complex demands of flight testing and aerospace innovation.
A Dedicated Maintenance Capability
Under the terms of the contract, Voyageur will establish a dedicated maintenance capability within AETE’s hangars. The company will also provide a leased aircraft to support pilot proficiency and operational readiness, ensuring that personnel involved in flight testing can maintain critical skills while supporting ongoing programs.
This operational support reinforces the broader infrastructure required for rigorous flight testing—an essential step in validating aircraft performance, mission systems, and modifications before they are introduced across the RCAF fleet.
For Voyageur, the contract aligns with the company’s broader focus on supporting defence and government aviation operations while contributing to Canada’s aerospace capability.
“The award of this contract supports our growth strategy with DND in operations and contracted special mission aircraft services,” said Carl Kumpic, Vice President, Defence & Government Programs, Voyageur Aviation Corp. “Working with AETE is very exciting for us as they represent the leading edge of flight testing for the RCAF. As an organization that routinely performs flight testing and modifications, we anticipate excellent collaboration and continued value.”
Strengthening Canada’s Aviation Test Enterprise
The partnership reflects the increasingly collaborative nature of Canada’s defence aerospace sector, where government units and industry partners work together to sustain and evolve critical capabilities.
By supporting AETE’s operations, Voyageur is helping enable the technical and operational work that underpins the safe introduction of new technologies, aircraft upgrades, and mission systems across Canada’s military aviation fleet.
As the RCAF continues to modernize its aircraft and expand its operational capabilities, organizations like AETE—and the industry partners that support them—remain central to ensuring that every modification, system upgrade, and capability enhancement is rigorously tested before entering service.
