The Royal Canadian Navy has a new commander. Vice Admiral Mark Norman assumed the role from Vice Admiral Paul Maddison during a formal ceremony in Ottawa today.
Norman said he was humbled by the opportunity to lead. “It is an absolute honour and privilege for me to assume Command of the Royal Canadian Navy, especially at such an exciting time in our history.”
He has served as the deputy commander of the RCN since 2011, and brings command experience as the executive officer of HMCS Iroquois, commanding officer of St. John’s and commander of Canadian Fleet – Atlantic. He also also held a number of senior positions at NDHQ, including director of Maritime Training and Education, director of International Plans on the Strategic Joint Staff, and director of Transformation and Strategic Planning in the Vice Chief of Defence Staff organization.
Maddison will retire from the Canadian Armed Forces after 38 years of service.
