On March 24, 2026 Christiane Fox, Deputy Minister of National Defence and Gen Jennie Carignan, Chief of the Defence Staff released the following message:

We are pleased to officially welcome Kevin Brosseau to the Defence Team as the new Senior Associate Deputy Minister of National Defence, Commissioner of the Canadian Coast Guard (CCG), and Canada’s Fentanyl Czar.

Recent defence related announcements underscore the Government of Canada’s commitment to strengthening Canada’s security, modernizing the Canadian Armed Forces, and enhancing operational readiness across the Defence Team in a rapidly evolving global environment. Kevin’s appointment as Senior Associate Deputy Minister of National Defence reinforces this focus, bringing added leadership capacity and operational expertise to support coordinated delivery as we advance these priorities.

As Commissioner of the Canadian Coast Guard, Kevin will provide strong strategic direction and effective oversight of the Coast Guard, in alignment with federal priorities. He brings a clear vision focused on strengthening operational readiness, deepening collaboration with Indigenous, government, and industry partners, and ensuring the CCG continues to deliver vital services that protect Canadians and advance Canada’s maritime security.

Kevin also continues in his role as Canada’s Fentanyl Czar, leading a coordinated federal response to combat the supply of illicit fentanyl, in close collaboration with domestic and international partners.

Having Kevin in these roles reinforces our ability to support Defence Team members, streamline collaboration across organizations, and strengthen Canada’s overall security posture.

We look forward to working together to advance this important work and deliver on Canada’s defence and maritime priorities. Please join us in welcoming him to the Defence Team.
