Canada has taken a decisive step toward strengthening its maritime security. In early September, the Department of National Defence (DND) announced that the Canadian Coast Guard (CCG) is now officially part of the Defence Team—an integration that underscores the growing importance of coordinated action on the seas.
This move reflects more than a simple organizational shift. It signals Canada’s commitment to enhancing collaboration across federal departments and aligning resources to meet the increasingly complex demands of safeguarding national waters. With the Coast Guard’s expertise now woven into the broader Defence fabric, Canada is better positioned to respond to both traditional and emerging maritime threats.
“I am honoured to welcome the Canadian Coast Guard to the Defence Team. This transition is an important step that will allow us to better coordinate our efforts at sea, strengthen our response to new and evolving threats, and ensure the safety and security of Canadians. By working more closely together, we are building on a trusted partnership and enhancing Canada’s ability to protect its waters and sovereignty,” affirmed the Honourable David J. McGuinty, Minister of National Defence.
Building on a Legacy of Service
The Canadian Coast Guard has long stood at the front lines of Canada’s maritime operations. From search and rescue missions and icebreaking to environmental response and safe navigation, the CCG has delivered services critical to Canadians’ safety and prosperity. That expertise will now directly complement the strategic and operational objectives of DND and the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF).
“For more than 60 years, the Canadian Coast Guard has stood as one of Canada’s most trusted and respected institutions. That trust is built every day by the dedicated people who are the backbone of this proud organization. This move will help strengthen joint operations with security and intelligence partners, enabling us to respond more quickly and keep communities safe,” stated the Honourable Joanne Thompson, Minister of Fisheries.
While the Coast Guard will retain its identity as a civilian Special Operating Agency, its integration with National Defence ensures that its contributions are even more closely aligned with national security priorities. Importantly, the transition also brings personnel from Fisheries and Oceans Canada into the fold, boosting collaboration across government in support of Canada’s maritime interests.
Expanding the Coast Guard’s Role
In addition to joining the Defence Team, the Government of Canada has proposed expanding the CCG’s responsibilities through Bill C-2, now before Parliament. If passed, the legislation will broaden the agency’s mandate to include maritime security activities, empowering the CCG to play a greater role in defending Canada’s waters while continuing its essential civilian missions.
This expansion comes at a critical time. As Canada faces mounting challenges in the Arctic and other maritime regions, integrating the Coast Guard’s unique capabilities with those of the CAF ensures a stronger, more coordinated national presence.
“Today marks an important milestone as the Canadian Coast Guard joins the Department of National Defence. This historic step will strengthen our collaboration, enhance our capabilities, and improve our service to Canadians,” expressed Mario Pelletier, Commissioner of the Canadian Coast Guard.
A Milestone in Defence Integration
The inclusion of the Coast Guard into the Defence Team is a milestone in Canada’s evolving security landscape. It represents a deliberate effort to unify resources, share intelligence, and strengthen operational coordination across agencies.
For Canada’s maritime domain—whether in ice-covered Arctic passages, along vast coastlines, or in busy shipping lanes—the message is clear: Canada is building the partnerships and structures needed to remain secure and resilient in the face of future challenges.
