His Majesty’s Canadian Ship (HMCS) Montréal embarked on its latest mission on April 14, 2024. The crew bid farewell to their loved ones during the departure ceremony held at HMCS Scotian.
HMCS Montréal is the first of three Royal Canadian Navy (RCN) warships that deploy annually as part of Operation HORIZON, a pivotal initiative under the umbrella of the Government of Canada’s Indo-Pacific Strategy. This strategic maneuver underscores Canada’s steadfast commitment to the Indo-Pacific region, solidifying its position as a key player in international security.
“As a Pacific nation, the security and stability of the broader Indo-Pacific region is vital to Canada’s future. It is the world’s fastest growing region and home to six of Canada’s top 13 trading partners. As outlined in our Indo-Pacific Strategy, Canada recognizes the impact that Indo-Pacific security will have on our future prosperity and stability – and that is why we are increasing our military presence in the region by deploying three Halifax-class frigates per year. I thank our sailors and aviators for their dedication to Canada, and I wish them fair winds and following seas,” expressed he Honourable Bill Blair, Minister of National Defence.
As part of Operation HORIZON, HMCS Montréal will actively engage with international allies, fostering stronger bonds and bolstering relationships with likeminded nations. Through joint exercises, naval integration, and diplomatic collaborations, the ship will serve as a tangible symbol of Canada’s unwavering dedication to global peace and stability.
Rear-Admiral Josée Kurtz, Commander Maritime Forces Atlantic and Commander Joint Task Force Atlantic said: “Today’s departure represents the significant work and dedication of the Atlantic Fleet in promoting security and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific region. As the first ship to deploy on Operation HORIZON this year, the sailors and aviators on board HMCS Montréal will collaborate with our international partners, contribute towards regional security, and strengthen the strategic interests of Canada. I know Montreal’smission will reflect positively on the RCN and wish the crew a safe and successful deployment. Fair winds!”
The mission’s scope extends beyond mere military operations; it encompasses a broader vision of diplomatic engagement and values promotion. By actively participating in the Indo-Pacific region, Canada not only reinforces its diplomatic presence but also upholds its core principles on the world stage.
“The ship’s company of HMCS Montréal has been diligently preparing for Operation HORIZON, and I have the utmost confidence in their ability to display excellence at sea and enhance interoperability with allied navies. I must also thank the families of our crew, who are the heart of our forces. Without their continued support, we would not be able to accomplish what is required of us. So, I thank you for all your efforts in preparation for this departure,” expressed Commander Travis Bain, Commanding Officer HMCS Montréal.
