Canada’s Space Ambitions Take Flight

Canada’s journey toward a fully sovereign space capability reached a new milestone this week as MDA Space Ltd. announced a $10 million equity investment in Maritime Launch Services Inc. The partnership cements MDA Space’s position as both an equity owner and strategic operational partner in the nation’s first commercial orbital launch complex — Spaceport Nova Scotia.

For Canada, this marks more than a financial transaction. It represents the next stage in the development of a complete domestic space value chain, connecting ground-based infrastructure to orbital operations, and bolstering national competitiveness in the global launch services market.

“MDA Space’s investment and partnership come at a pivotal moment for Maritime Launch and for Canada’s space future,” said Stephen Matier, President and CEO of Maritime Launch Services. “By combining MDA Space’s world-class technical heritage with our operational focus at Spaceport Nova Scotia, we are creating the conditions our launch vehicle clients need: reliability, responsiveness, and integration across the full mission campaign. Together, we are building a complete sovereign launch solution that strengthens Canadian innovation, drives economic growth, and enhances security in space.”

Powering Up Spaceport Nova Scotia

Located near Canso, on Nova Scotia’s rugged Atlantic coast, Spaceport Nova Scotia is designed to deliver reliable, cost-effective, and sustainable access to low-Earth orbit. The facility will support commercial, civil, government, and defence missions, offering responsive launch services for satellites across a wide range of orbital inclinations — all from a single site on Canadian soil.

MDA Space’s investment will help accelerate the spaceport’s readiness for orbital launch operations, advancing Canada’s ability to put its own satellites — and those of its partners — into orbit from home turf. As an operational partner, MDA Space is expected to play a key role in both the development and future operations of the facility, leveraging its deep experience in mission systems, robotics, and space infrastructure.

“Maritime Launch has been methodically advancing the development of Spaceport Nova Scotia, focused on doing it right, with safety, community, and operational excellence, to address the needs of the domestic and global space ecosystem,” said Mike Greenley, CEO of MDA Space. “In a rapidly changing space industry, establishing sovereign launch capacity in Canada that will respond to the global demand for alternate launch capabilities on Canada’s Atlantic coast is important. This is an example of strategically located critical infrastructure that is needed. MDA Space is pleased to partner with Maritime Launch on this exciting new chapter for the Canadian space industry.”

Economic Lift-Off for Atlantic Canada

Beyond its technological implications, the partnership promises a powerful economic impact. Spaceport Nova Scotia is projected to generate high-quality jobs, stimulate local supply-chain development, and attract global investment to Atlantic Canada — reinforcing the region’s growing role in the national innovation ecosystem.

This investment aligns with Canada’s broader strategic focus on building sovereign space and defence capabilities, while creating opportunities for Canadian companies to lead in a rapidly expanding global market.

Building a Stronger Space Value Chain

The transaction includes an Investor Rights Agreement, granting MDA Space the right to nominate a member to Maritime Launch’s board of directors and to participate in future financing rounds. The investment will also support research and development initiatives critical to the spaceport’s ongoing progress and facilitate the retirement of convertible debentures, strengthening Maritime Launch’s financial position as it nears operational readiness.

For MDA Space, the move complements its long legacy as a trusted mission partner to the global space industry. For Maritime Launch, it delivers the momentum needed to move from construction to commercial operations — transforming a vision into a functioning gateway to orbit.

Together, they’re not just launching rockets — they’re launching a new era of Canadian space independence.
