Canada has announced a new wave of military support for Ukraine, committing an additional $64.8 million to bolster its defence efforts against ongoing aggression. This latest aid package was introduced by Canada’s Defence Minister, Bill Blair, during a meeting with NATO Defence Ministers in Brussels on October 18, 2024.

“Canada stands united with its Allies and partners in our unwavering support for Ukraine as it fights for its freedom and security. The military assistance announced today provides Ukraine with important resources needed to defend itself against Russian aggression. Canada will continue to do what it takes to help them achieve victory,” said the Honourable Bill Blair, Minister of National Defence.

One of Ukraine’s urgent battlefield needs remains small arms and ammunition, and Canada is stepping up with $27.3 million dedicated to procuring these items from Canadian manufacturers. This builds on over $120 million worth of small arms and ammunition already donated by Canada, ensuring Ukrainian forces have access to reliable resources that can be deployed quickly in combat zones.

Canada’s support is also addressing the specific needs of Ukraine’s women soldiers. In a significant expansion of last year’s pilot initiative, Canada will contribute $20 million to produce protective gear and military uniforms designed for female members of Ukraine’s Armed Forces. With this funding, Canada aims to outfit 30,000 women soldiers with appropriately sized gear to enhance their safety and effectiveness in the field.

A critical component of modern warfare, drone technology has become invaluable to Ukraine’s defence. Canada is joining the Drone Capability Coalition, which unites NATO allies in supporting Ukraine’s drone industry and procurement. With a $5 million investment in the Coalition’s Common Fund, Canada is helping to develop and supply drones that will enhance Ukraine’s surveillance and defence capabilities.

Minister Blair also unveiled additional funding of up to $10.5 million for training Ukrainian forces, extending Canada’s active role in providing specialized support and military expertise. Furthermore, Canada is allocating up to $2 million to support Ukraine’s cyber resilience through the IT Capability Coalition. This contribution underscores Canada’s commitment to countering cyber threats and supporting Ukraine’s digital defences.

This aid package is part of a larger $500 million commitment to Ukraine that Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced in July 2024, which includes a substantial $444 million aimed at military equipment, operational support, and training for Ukraine’s armed forces. Through these initiatives, Canada continues to play a pivotal role in strengthening Ukraine’s defences and supporting its sovereignty.
