With substantial cost savings over live training, virtual training has been increasing in popularity globally, especially in the military sector. The advantage that virtual training brings though, is not only limited to cost benefits, it also provides safety for the crew, improved navigation, the growth of skills, improved communications, less operational risks, data capture and improved user performance.

It is through this growth that virtual training is evolving to bring richer experiences to trainees making it more fully immersive.

The Halifax-based training and simulation company, Bluedrop Training & Simulation Inc. has been designing, developing, and integrating advanced training solutions for over 20 years, providing highly interactive courseware and state-of-the-art training and simulation products while working with large OEMs such as CAE, Lockheed Martin, Sikorsky and Boeing on major Canadian platforms.

One of Bluedrop’s latest training devices is the Rear Crew Mission Trainer (RCMT), a fully immersive virtual trainer for mission-specific rear-crew training. Through this trainer, the rear-crew of a helicopter can develop skills in team-wide communication during mission training.

The realism of the training environment is further enhanced with the accurate rendering of all other operators working within the simulator as avatars in the helmet mounted display to reinforce the full-crew training experience.

The RCMT helps trainees develop the necessary skills by ensuring that procedures are adhered to during training. It can be used for a variety of operations such as virtual replenishment, search and rescue (SAR) and slung loads.
