The Department of National Defence has just issued a joint statement from Government of Canada and Vice-Admiral Mark Norman that they have reached a “mutually acceptable agreement, the details of which will remain confidential” resulting in VAdm Norman leaving the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF).
VAdm Norman was temporarily relieved from his post as the Vice Chief of the Defence Staff on January 16, 2017, after he was accused of releasing sensitive government information which potentially constituted a breach of trust. He was charged with Breach of Trust, but that charge was stayed on May 8, 2019, as there was no reasonable chance of conviction.
“Vice Admiral Norman remains committed to the Navy, the Canadian Armed Forces and their mission. However, after consulting with his family, his chain of command, and his counsel, VAdm Norman has decided to retire from the Canadian Armed Forces,” the statement reads.
The statement went on to say that, “Both parties believe that this resolution will return focus to the critical work of the Canadian Forces, which is the protection of all Canadians.”
VAdm Norman has provided 38 years of dedicated service to the CAF, the majority of the time as a Royal Canadian Navy officer.
