Crews stand ready to respond at a moment’s notice to emergencies ranging from capsized vessels and medical evacuations to environmental incidents. With heavy recreational traffic in summer and commercial shipping year-round, Lake Ontario demands constant vigilance—and the new Cobourg station ensures the Coast Guard can meet that demand with speed and precision.

“The Canadian Coast Guard search and rescue station is a vital asset on Lake Ontario, playing a key role in ensuring the safety of boaters and mariners throughout our region. This new station will strengthen the Canadian Coast Guard’s ability to respond quickly and effectively in times of emergency to ensure our community feels protected and safe while on the water,” explained Chris Malette, Member of Parliament, Bay of Quinte.

Purpose-Built for Today’s Missions

Representing an investment of $6.8 million, the new Cobourg Search and Rescue Station is more than just a building—it’s a modern operational hub designed with the needs of today’s Coast Guard professionals in mind.

The facility includes a large workshop for vessel maintenance, repairs, and winter storage, ensuring critical rescue assets remain mission-ready through all seasons. For personnel on duty, new living accommodations feature five bedrooms, a full kitchen, comfortable communal spaces, laundry facilities, and even a dedicated exercise area—reflecting the Government of Canada’s commitment to both operational readiness and crew well-being.

At the heart of the new station is the Ready Room—a dedicated space that mirrors the fast-response model of a fire station. Here, Coast Guard members can gear up quickly, with direct access to all essential search-and-rescue equipment. Designed for efficiency and rapid mobilization, it ensures that rescue crews can respond to distress calls on Lake Ontario in record time.

Strengthening Canada’s Maritime Safety Infrastructure

The opening of the Cobourg station underscores a broader federal investment in maritime safety, infrastructure, and service delivery. It is part of an ongoing national effort to modernize Coast Guard facilities across the country—ensuring the organization’s highly trained personnel have the tools, spaces, and technology they need to perform their lifesaving mission.

Every hour saved in response time can make the difference between tragedy and rescue. With this new facility operational, the Canadian Coast Guard continues to set the standard for readiness, resilience, and dedication in service to Canadians.
