Canada’s space and defence industry footprint continues to expand on the global stage, with MDA Space securing a key position inside one of the United States’ most ambitious defence modernization initiatives.
MDA Space Ltd. has been selected by the U.S. Missile Defense Agency (MDA) for the Scalable Homeland Innovative Enterprise Layered Defense (SHIELD) program, receiving an indefinite delivery/indefinite quantity (IDIQ) contract that enables the company to compete for future task orders supporting the program’s evolving mission requirements.
The SHIELD initiative represents a wide-ranging, multi-domain effort designed to strengthen homeland defence against emerging and evolving threats across land, sea, air, cyberspace, and space. By securing an IDIQ position under the program, MDA Space is now eligible to bid on a broad portfolio of future work as the initiative advances.
For MDA Space, the award reinforces its growing role as a trusted mission partner within complex defence and space ecosystems. The company’s selection reflects its long-standing experience delivering advanced, mission-critical solutions that support national security, operational resilience, and sovereign capability.
“As a long-time trusted mission partner to space and defence organizations worldwide, MDA Space is committed to delivering mission-critical solutions and strategic operational capabilities,” said Mike Greenley, CEO of MDA Space. “Our selection for the Missile Defense Agency SHIELD IDIQ is a recognition of the technology, talent and expertise MDA Space offers to meet defence, security and sovereignty requirements.”
The IDIQ structure allows the Missile Defense Agency to rapidly access specialized expertise and technology as program needs evolve, while giving selected industry partners the flexibility to respond to new tasking over time. For MDA Space, the award positions the company to contribute to future SHIELD activities as requirements mature and additional capabilities are brought online.
The announcement also underscores Canada’s increasing role in allied defence and space programs, particularly in areas where advanced technology, systems integration, and mission assurance are critical. As the SHIELD program continues to take shape, MDA Space’s inclusion signals confidence in the company’s ability to support complex, multi-domain defence objectives at scale.
