From Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, to Canada’s northernmost patrols, MetOcean Telematics has carved out a reputation for keeping those on the edge of the map firmly connected. On September 9, 2025, the company announced a major milestone: it has been awarded a landmark contract with the Government of Canada to provide Iridium® satellite services and hardware, reinforcing its place at the centre of the country’s secure communications strategy.
The contract, awarded through a competitive bidding process and administered by Shared Services Canada (SSC), establishes MetOcean as a key supplier of Iridium satellite communications for federal agencies at home and abroad. For a nation defined by its vast geography—from remote Arctic coastlines to deployments in global theatres—the agreement underscores a fundamental truth: reliable connectivity is mission-critical.
“We’ve proudly supported the Government of Canada with Iridium services for more than a decade now,” said Tony Chedrawy, CEO of MetOcean Telematics. “To be awarded a critical contract once again with the Government of Canada is a tremendous honour, and a testament to the strength of our team, our technology, and our commitment to Canadian federal operations at home and internationally.”
Building on Proven Trust
This is not MetOcean’s first time at the helm of such responsibility. The company has previously been trusted with similar contracts, and this latest win is seen as both a reaffirmation of its proven track record and a vote of confidence in its ability to deliver resilience in even the harshest conditions.
The scope of the agreement is broad. MetOcean will supply airtime, voice and data services, as well as hardware and accessories drawn from more than 30 Iridium ecosystem partners. Whether it’s Short Burst Data® (SBD®) enabling rapid, low-bandwidth transmissions or the higher-speed Iridium Certus® powering real-time data applications, these services will support a wide array of government operations across land and sea.
Connecting Canada to the World
The Iridium satellite network is unique in offering truly global coverage, including the polar regions. For Canada, this capability is more than a technical detail—it’s a lifeline. From Arctic sovereignty patrols to international peacekeeping missions, the network ensures federal teams stay in contact, regardless of distance or terrain.
For the Government of Canada, the partnership means more than reliable connectivity; it represents continuity in secure and scalable communications. For MetOcean, it further cements its role as a leader in delivering solutions that support not only government and defence, but also commercial and scientific applications where resilience and reliability cannot be compromised.
Strengthening Leadership in a Growing Sector
As the defence and security landscape evolves, the demand for satellite communications in support of the Internet of Things (IoT), remote sensing, and global operations continues to rise. With this new contract, MetOcean Telematics strengthens its position not just as a Canadian success story, but as a global leader at the forefront of satellite communication innovation.
From its base in Dartmouth to missions across the world, MetOcean is proving once again that the signal of trust it delivers reaches far beyond borders.
“Congratulations to the MetOcean team for once again winning this important contract,” said Tim Last, executive vice president, Sales and Marketing, Iridium. “Iridium Connected™ devices from MetOcean provide the Canadian government with weather-resilient L-band connectivity on land, sea, and in the air. Our longtime collaboration will continue to enable communication when it matters most—in Ottawa, above the Arctic Circle, or abroad.”
