The second crew member of the fatal CH-148 Cyclone accident that occurred on April 29 has been identified. The Office of the Chief Coroner for Ontario identified the partial remains of Captain Brenden Ian MacDonald on May 9, 2020.
Captain MacDonald was one of the six military members killed in the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) helicopter accident off the coast of Greece. The only other body identified at this time is Sub-Lieutenant Abbigail Cowbrough. The four other members of the team are still missing and presumed dead. They are:
- Captain Kevin Hagen, Pilot, from Nanaimo, British Columbia
- Captain Maxime Miron-Morin, Air Combat Systems Officer, from Trois-Rivières, Québec
- Sub-Lieutenant Matthew Pyke, Naval Warfare Officer, from Truro, Nova Scotia
- Master Corporal Matthew Cousins, Airborne Electronic Sensor Operator, from Guelph, Ontario
The partial remains of Captain MacDonald were discovered during recovery efforts and positively identified through DNA testing. He was from New Glasgow, Nova Scotia.
The Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) is supporting their members and families during this difficult time with a wide range of resources. Search and recovery efforts are still ongoing while an RCAF Flight Safety team is continuing its investigation into the accident.
