ESL Labs, an environmental and EMI/EMC test facility and subsidiary of J-Squared Technologies Inc., commemorated a multiyear, $10M upgrade with a visit on July 10 from Nova Scotia Premier Tim Houston.
The facility has introduced several advanced testing systems:
- A Medium Weight Shock Machine (MWSM)—one of only two in Canada and 19 worldwide—used to simulate shock from nuclear or conventional weapons. It tests the resilience of shipboard machinery, systems, equipment, and structures.
- A Walk-In Salt Cyclic and SO₂ Corrosion Test Chamber designed for above-deck component testing on warships and commercial vessels.
- A Large Base Motion Simulator that replicates ship movements—pitch, roll, heel, and trim—for performance evaluations in conditions up to Sea State 6 (4 to 6 metre waves).
- A Blowing Sand and Dust Simulator to assess equipment durability in harsh, particulate-laden environments.
“Nova Scotia has a proud history with the Royal Canadian Navy, and I’m pleased to see this legacy continue through new innovations to support our defence industry,” Houston stated in a press release. “As Canada puts a renewed focus on defence, ESL Labs is showing the world why Nova Scotia will continue to be a leader in marine and defence technologies.”
The upgraded infrastructure allows the MIL-STD certified test lab to carry out broader and larger-scale testing for military applications—including the River Class Destroyer program—as well as other marine and defense equipment and systems.
