On April 2 in Ottawa, the Canadian Armed Forces Cyber Command (CAFCYBERCOM) unveiled its official Command badge—an emblem that signals not only institutional maturity, but the growing importance of cyber operations within the broader mission of the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF). As Canada sharpens its focus on defending national interests in increasingly contested digital and electromagnetic environments, the badge arrives as both a marker of progress and a statement of intent.
For CAFCYBERCOM, the launch represents a defining moment in its evolution as the military authority responsible for cyber operations. More than a visual identifier, the badge reflects the Command’s core mandate: defending CAF networks, conducting cyber operations, and supporting missions at home and abroad.
Its design carries layered meaning. A green and black field underscores the Command’s integration of signals intelligence, electronic warfare, and cyber capabilities—three domains that now converge in modern operations. Green pays homage to signals intelligence heritage, while black reflects operations in the contested electromagnetic spectrum. At the centre, a chess knight symbolizes the deliberate and strategic application of cyber capabilities, both defensive and offensive. Supporting elements—a lightning bolt and interlaced rings—highlight operational precision and technical expertise, while the Royal Crown and maple leaves anchor the badge in constitutional authority and national service.
The Command’s motto, Sapere Aude — “dare to know”—captures the intellectual discipline required to operate effectively in a domain defined by constant change, ambiguity, and adversarial pressure.
“The launch of our Command badge marks an important step in Canadian Armed Forces Cyber Command’s evolution. It reflects our mandate, our responsibility, and the operational effects we deliver in defence of Canada. Cyberspace is a contested domain, and this badge represents the professionalism, discipline and readiness of the people entrusted to operate within it,” stated Major-General Dave Yarker, Commander, Canadian Armed Forces Cyber Command.
The emphasis on professionalism and readiness speaks to a broader reality: cyber operations are no longer peripheral to military capability—they are central to it. As threats evolve, so too must the structures, identities, and cultures that support those tasked with defending against them.
“This badge represents our people and our culture. It stands for the standards we uphold, the expertise we cultivate, and the trust placed in us to defend the Canadian Armed Forces in the cyber and electronic warfare domains. This launch reinforces our shared identity and the pride we take in serving Canada,” said Chief Warrant Officer Peter Holub, Command Chief Warrant Officer, Canadian Armed Forces Cyber Command.
Together, the badge and its symbolism reinforce a unified identity for CAFCYBERCOM—one rooted in technical excellence, operational precision, and service to Canada. In an era where the lines between physical and digital conflict continue to blur, that identity is becoming increasingly vital.
