The IDEaS program and 2022 Corrosion Detection in Ships Sandbox (CDIS)

In the realm of naval innovation, in April 2022 and in collaboration with the Royal Canadian Navy (RCN), IDEaS conducted a Sandbox where 9 innovators were invited to demonstrate their technologies to detect and assess corrosion on CAF ships without reliance on human visual inspection or removal of equipment, in both simulated and real-world conditions. The Sandbox, to help the CAF reduce corrosion’s operational impact onboard ships and improve the effectiveness of scheduled and unscheduled maintenance, was conducted at the Center for Ocean Ventures and Entrepreneurship (COVE) in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. As a result of this Sandbox, the RCN successfully acquired knowledge of the applicability and versatility demonstrated by participants’ technologies, including the limitations of their technology, and the impact of the real ship conditions versus a controlled/lab environment.
