A new partnership between SkyAlyne and Canadian Base Operators (CBO) is set to play a key role in supporting the Royal Canadian Air Force’s (RCAF) Future Aircrew Training (FAcT) initiative. Announced today, this collaboration aims to help SkyAlyne provide comprehensive support throughout the 25-year duration of the FAcT program. SkyAlyne, a joint venture between CAE and KF Aerospace, was awarded the contract in 2024 by the Government of Canada to lead the RCAF’s cutting-edge aircrew training efforts, and preparations are underway to begin implementation.
“SkyAlyne is building an entirely new, advanced Pilot and Aircrew training solution for the RCAF from the ground up. As the existing training programs near end of life, this is a generational opportunity to shape the future of military aircrew training in Canada,” commented SkyAlyne’s General Manager, Kevin Lemke. “To successfully accomplish our mission, it takes the best pan-Canadian team possible. CBO will be a significant asset to SkyAlyne and the FAcT program.”
CBO, known for its extensive experience with the current RCAF Pilot and Aircrew training systems, brings a wealth of expertise to the FAcT program. CBO’s capabilities span a wide range of services, from airfield maintenance to air traffic control, meteorological services, snow removal, and Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting (ARFF). Additionally, CBO will provide critical support in facility management, including accommodation services, food operations, and the upkeep of infrastructure. These services will be vital to the successful delivery of the FAcT program at two key locations: Southport, MB, and Winnipeg, MB.
“This new contract ensures continuous employment for CBO in Southport, MB, for the next 25 years, which is fantastic news and enhances our joint venture affiliation with two Indigenous Nations,” explains Mike Peckham, General Manager of CBO. “With our extensive experience in airfield maintenance, Air Traffic Control, Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting, and facility management — gained through years of supporting the RCAF’s existing training programs — we’re proud to deliver critical site services and operational support to the Future Aircrew Training program at Southport and Winnipeg.”
The FAcT program is currently transitioning into its role as the primary training platform for all new RCAF pilots and aircrew members. Over the next few years, it will absorb and streamline the responsibilities of the RCAF’s three existing training programs. The program’s coordination is managed through the Joint Management Office at SkyAlyne’s headquarters in Ottawa, while three operational bases—Moose Jaw, SK, Southport, and Winnipeg—will serve as the hubs for its implementation.
“SkyAlyne is truly Canadian – headquartered in Canada with Canadian ownership. Our team is working hard every day to ensure the RCAF has the best trained military Pilots and Aircrew in the world, and the spinoff economic benefits stay in the hands of Canadians,” concluded Lemke.
This new agreement represents a significant step forward in the development and execution of Canada’s future aircrew training systems, ensuring that the RCAF continues to maintain its world-class standards for decades to come.
