Into The North
Is the story of HMCS Harry DeWolf’s circumnavigation of North America, told through the lens of its crew. The ambitious voyage was the inaugural deployment of the Arctic and Offshore Patrol Vessel class; a trip which made history for the Navy, and Canada. This is a story about discovery, a story about transformation, and the start of a new era for our Royal Canadian Navy.

Mixed Reality – Optimizing Operational Training and Support in the Marine Sector
The last two years have seen tremendous growth in the adoption of mixed reality applications as organizations accelerate their digital transformation programs. In the Marine Sector, mixed reality is an increasingly critical enabler to programs that are developing concepts like ‘Mariner of the Future’, SMART Ship and Shipyard 4.0. This technology will enable personnel working on vessels under construction or, downstream, on maintenance and in-service support on those vessels, to draw down task relevant digital and 3D assets supporting a wide range of activities and services. This would include demonstration and training tasks, analysis and diagnostics for issue resolution, assembly and fitting, through to acceptance, maintenance and through life in-service support.
This session will cover, how mixed reality tools are positively impacting Marine Sector organizations’ ability to create operational efficiencies, enable worker autonomy and empowerment, and facilitate rapid issue resolution all while eliminating traditional barriers associated with access to experts and a reduced ability to travel.

10:30 – 11:00

Networking Break

11:00 – 11:30

Presentation 4

Brennan West, Director, Defence & Aftermarket Business Unit, Gastops

The Evolving Impact of Digital Twins  - From Bearing Design to Fleet Management
Digital twins are digital representations of  physical constructs that incorporate items such as graphical models, dynamic simulations, virtual control systems, sensor data, configuration, logistics and maintenance data. Having been in existence for many years, Digital Twins are now evolving into  increasingly powerful tools for designing, managing, and sustaining equipment and equipment fleets.  This presentation will provide an overview on the use and benefit of individual mechanical component, ship propulsion system, ship, and fleet level Digital Twins including Gastops’ experience with the technology, followed by a generalized method for digital twin creation, which focuses on using physics-based, data informed models. The presentation will conclude with examples of individual, system level, ship level and fleet level digital twins.

Kristina Proulx, Director of Innovation Operations, Innovation for Defence Excellence and Security (IDEaS)

Department of National Defence (DND) Innovation for Defence Excellence and Security (IDEaS) Program
IDEaS continuously taps into the extraordinary talent and ingenuity resident in Canada with various calls for proposals every year. With its five funding elements, IDEaS supports the development of solutions by helping push technology forward from early R&D to a demonstrable level that can increase defence capabilities.

IDEaS is for all Canadian innovators, from defence primes to academia, Small and Medium sized enterprises to not-for-profits, municipal/ provincial/territorial entities to individuals. Details of the program and well as announcements of opportunities are available on the website: www.canada.ca/Defence-IDEaS
