As governments and defence organizations place increasing strategic importance on space, MDA Space Ltd. has introduced a new platform aimed at protecting the satellites and orbital infrastructure modern economies depend on.

Announced at the 41st Space Symposium in Colorado Springs, MDA MIDNIGHT™ is a maneuverable space control platform designed to defend and protect the space domain. Built for defence organizations, the system is engineered to perform rendezvous and proximity operations (RPO), allowing it to detect, identify, counter and deter threats to critical space assets and orbits.

“With new and emerging threats from adversaries, the critical space infrastructure that we all depend on requires greater protection,” said Mike Greenley, CEO of MDA Space. “Backed by 40 years of on-orbit robotics operations, decades of mission planning and satellite operations, advanced digital technologies and our high-volume commercial production capacity, MDA MIDNIGHT™ brings together the elements required for this critical mission, helping national and international defence organizations safeguard the space domain on which billions rely.”

The launch comes at a time when nations are reassessing the security of their orbital assets. Satellites now underpin everything from communications and navigation to national security and economic resilience. Industry research from the Secure World Foundation has noted growing interest in so-called “bodyguard” satellites designed to respond to an increasingly complex threat environment. In Canada, the federal government has also recently identified space as a key sovereign capability.

MDA MIDNIGHT™ is positioned as a rapid-response, mission-ready solution built on flight-proven technology. The spacecraft can be configured, manufactured and deployed quickly to meet evolving customer requirements. Beyond threat response, the platform is also designed to support existing military operations through on-orbit surveillance, asset relocation and satellite refueling.

Its initial mission profile focuses on low Earth orbit, where the spacecraft is designed to rendezvous with multiple collaborative assets and carry out a range of protective and defensive operations, including satellite inspection and status reporting, electronic counter-measures detection and mitigation, cooperative capture and release of satellites, and de-orbiting of a customer’s non-operational asset.

On the ground, operations will be supported by an experienced flight controller team with a track record of more than 100 free-flyer captures and decades of robotics operations in orbit. Select customers may also operate missions through MDA Space’s established Mission Control Centre.

“At MDA Space, our technology and our team have millions of hours of experience planning and conducting on-orbit operations,” said Holly Johnson, Vice President of Robotics and Space Operations at MDA Space. “As we bring this leadership to serve space defence customers, we are actively seeking military partnerships to collaborate on upcoming mission profiles and timing, as well as commercial payload partners to augment our suite of on-orbit capabilities.”

The new platform also draws on recent advances across MDA Space’s wider portfolio, including MDA SKYMAKER™ commercial robotics and the MDA AURORA™ satellite bus platform—signalling a broader strategy to combine robotics, satellite systems and operational expertise for next-generation space security missions.
