In a significant move to support Indigenous communities and encourage their involvement in space exploration, MDA Space Ltd., a leading player in the global space industry, has introduced a new scholarship initiative aimed at empowering the next generation of Indigenous leaders. The MDA Space Indigenous Student Scholarship will focus on expanding opportunities in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) education for Indigenous youth.
Partnering with Indspire, a national Indigenous charity that champions educational advancement for First Nations, Inuit, and Métis students, MDA Space is offering scholarships to five Indigenous post-secondary students who are pursuing studies in STEM fields. This collaboration reflects the company’s commitment to creating pathways for diverse talent within the growing space sector.
“Indspire’s vision of enriching Canada through Indigenous education and achievement aligns with our corporate values,” said Mike Greenley, CEO of MDA Space. “The growth of MDA Space and the broader space industry is being fueled by thousands of bright, hardworking individuals who push boundaries and tackle big challenges, and we are proud to be partnering with Indspire to support a new generation of Indigenous students to help take our mission to new heights.”
Mike DeGagné, President & CEO of Indspire, said: “This new scholarship is a vital investment – not just in the future of the space industry and in STEM education, but also in the power of Indigenous abilities. First Nations, Inuit, and Métis students who receive this scholarship will be empowered to succeed in their educational endeavours and, ultimately, to enter careers which will have a groundbreaking impact on the global economy. We are pleased to be working with MDA Space on this transformative initiative.”
Applications for the scholarship are now open, with the first deadline set for February 1, 2025, at 11:59 PM ET. Interested students can submit their applications online through the MDA Space – Indspire Funding portal.
This scholarship is part of MDA Space’s broader LaunchPad initiative, a program designed to foster an ecosystem that supports those interested in the space industry. Through LaunchPad, MDA Space aims to provide the resources and opportunities necessary for aspiring space professionals to thrive and contribute to the rapidly expanding space economy.
By investing in Indigenous students’ education and future careers, MDA Space is playing a crucial role in diversifying the workforce and ensuring that underrepresented communities have the tools and opportunities needed to succeed in the space industry.
