L3 MAS provides test pylon for Pratt & Whitney’s PW800 engine

L3 MAS delivered a modified experimental engine pylon to Pratt & Whitney Canada, according to an announcement made today. Previously designed and manufactured by L3 MAS for the PW814 engine, the pylon has now been altered to test the PurePower® PW800 engine.

Jacques Comtois, Vice President and General Manager of L3 MAS, said that they worked “hand in hand with Pratt & Whitney Canada in support of the development of a new engine.” He went on to add that the companies have an eight-year history of successful and collaborative work on many development projects.

The work done by L3 MAS on this latest project with Pratt & Whitney included the design and manufacture of the engine pylon modifications and systems to integrate the test pylon with the Boeing 747SP flying test bed. In what is a first for L3 MAS, the company used a dummy engine to validate and simulate system installation before delivery to Pratt & Whitney Canada.

Upon installation on Pratt & Whitney’s Boeing 747SP aircraft, the engine will go into the flight testing phase.
