As of January 10, 2025, Halifax, Nova Scotia, witnessed the departure of His Majesty’s Canadian Ship (HMCS) Margaret Brooke. This significant event marks the vessel’s inaugural participation in Operation PROJECTION 2025, taking the Harry DeWolf-class ship on an ambitious journey to South America and Antarctica. This deployment is particularly notable as it represents the Royal Canadian Navy’s (RCN) first circumnavigation of South America and its maiden voyage to Antarctic waters.

“Today, I welcome all to witness with us, a historic moment as our Navy takes a step further south, into the Antarctic region. Upon their departure for Operation PROJECTION 2025, our crew onboard His Majesty’s Canadian Ship Margaret Brooke embarks on a long and strenuous journey that will bring Canada’s forward presence and diplomacy to nations throughout the Central and South Americas. Having proven themselves the year prior as professional sailors capable of operating in a wide spectrum of challenging environments, I have no doubt that they will be successful on their new mission. Best of luck to each and every one of you,” expressed Rear-Admiral Josée Kurtz, Commander Maritime Forces Atlantic and Commander Joint Task Force Atlantic.

Throughout this mission, HMCS Margaret Brooke will play a crucial role in fostering and strengthening international partnerships. In collaboration with Global Affairs Canada, the ship is set to visit a series of ports across South America, engaging in diplomatic and cooperative activities.

“The crew of His Majesty’s Canadian Ship (HMCS) Margaret Brooke departs today on a ‘once in a career’ mission. We will be leaving our families and friends to embark on an operation that will help to advance Antarctic research, enhance Canada’s commitment to international peace and security, and help establish and foster relationships with countries in the South American region. I couldn’t be prouder of HMCS Margaret Brooke’s crew and all of the training and preparation they have done to be here. We couldn’t be where we are today without every member of the team and the unwavering support of their family and friends,” said Commander Teri Share, Commanding Officer HMCS Margaret Brooke.

A highlight of the mission will be the ship’s support for Canada’s Antarctic scientific endeavors. Onboard will be a team of scientists from various Government of Canada agencies, leveraging the unique capabilities of the Margaret Brooke to further research in the region.

Additionally, this deployment offers a valuable opportunity for the Royal Canadian Navy to demonstrate the innovative design and advanced operational capabilities of the Harry DeWolf-class vessels. The mission will not only underscore Canada’s Arctic prowess but also showcase these abilities in the challenging maritime environment of the Antarctic.
