The first senior promotions and appointments of General and Flag Officers for 2024 in the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) have been announced by General Jennie Carignan, Chief of the Defence Staff. These appointments are essential to guiding the CAF’s strategic priorities, fostering a diverse and inclusive culture, and demonstrating leadership on the global stage.

The CAF’s promotion process continues to prioritize selecting inclusive leaders who reflect the organization’s core values and ethos. Candidates for promotion undergo a rigorous evaluation, starting with an evidence-based character assessment, followed by a comprehensive “360-degree” or multi-rater assessment. This process involves feedback from a diverse group of evaluators, minimizing bias and providing a well-rounded view of the candidate’s leadership abilities and effectiveness. Additionally, each candidate participates in a conflict of interest and culture interview conducted by an external third party, independent of the Department of National Defence and CAF. This interview delves into the candidate’s personal experiences, self-awareness, and reflections on past challenges, failures, and successes.

Further promotions, appointments, and retirements will be announced as they are confirmed.
