Ukraine’s fight against relentless air assaults received a significant boost on November 22 with Canada’s contribution of a cutting-edge air defence system. The Honourable Bill Blair, Canada’s Minister of National Defence, confirmed that the National Advanced Surface-to-Air Missile System (NASAMS) donated by Canada has officially reached Ukrainian soil.

“This ground-based air defence system will help Ukraine protect itself against destructive air attacks. Canada support for Ukraine is steadfast and we will continue to step up and build on our contributions to Ukraine in their fight against Russia’s invasion. We thank the United States, as well as our partners in Norway, for their collaboration and ensuring the safe arrival of Canada’s donation of this NASAMS to the Armed Forces of Ukraine,” stated the Honourable Bill Blair, Minister of National Defence.

This advanced defense system is designed to shield military installations, essential civilian infrastructure, and populated areas from devastating air strikes. Strengthening Ukraine’s ability to counter aerial threats, this donation marks a pivotal step in Canada’s ongoing military support. Since February 2022, Canada has also supplied over 300 air defence missiles from its own Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) inventory, further enhancing Ukraine’s defensive capabilities.

The NASAMS delivery complements a range of military aid initiatives that Canada has already undertaken. Through Operation UNIFIER, Canadian forces continue to provide critical training to their Ukrainian counterparts. Additionally, previous assistance packages have included armoured vehicles, artillery, drone-mounted cameras, and winter gear. Canada’s Royal Canadian Air Force has played a crucial role in transporting these contributions, as well as military aid from allies and partners, directly to Ukraine.

Canada remains steadfast in its support for Ukraine amid escalating Russian aggression, particularly as air raids increase in intensity. By providing vital military resources, Canada underscores its unwavering commitment to help Ukraine defend its sovereignty against illegal and unjustifiable acts of war.
